Nearly 60,000 Americans will develop oral cancer this year, reflecting a concerning upward trend.
That’s one reason why oral health care isn’t just about having a great smile. At Porter Dental Health Clinic in Hot Springs, AR, Dr. Lance Porter and Dr. Will Warren take the time to look after your complete oral health, including the detection of signs of oral cancer. That’s why we include oral cancer screenings as part of regular checkups. It’s quick, painless, and could save your life.
How Oral Cancer Screenings Work
An oral cancer screening is a fast and simple part of your dental visit. Using a small mirror and bright light, your dentist at Porter Dental Health Clinic carefully examines all parts of your mouth and throat, including:
- Lips
- Tongue
- Gums
- Cheek lining
- Tonsils
- Roof of the mouth
- Throat
- Jaw
- Under the chin and neck
After a careful visual inspection, Dr. Porter or Dr. Warren palpates (gently feels) those areas to check for lumps, bumps, or other abnormalities that may not be visible to the naked eye.
If anything seems off, we’ll ask whether it feels tender or uncomfortable, because pain or sensitivity can sometimes be an early sign of a problem.
Depending on your risk factors and situation, your dentist may also use a special light or dye to examine some areas in more detail.
Oral cancer screenings aren’t painful, and one of our main goals is demystifying the process. We explain the entire exam as we go, and we also outline what to watch for between visits. If you ever notice a sore, spot, or bump that doesn’t go away, you’ll know it’s time to call.
Why Oral Cancer Screenings Matter
Catching oral cancer early gives you the best shot at beating it. Treatment is easier, recovery is smoother, and you’re more likely to stay healthy and keep doing the things you love—like eating, talking, and smiling without worry.
Since early oral cancer may not cause pain or obvious symptoms, these screenings are key. We also use the time to discuss your personal risk factors, your health history, and any concerns you may have. The more informed you are, the more confident you’ll feel in your health.
Our newly remodeled office was designed with comfort and relaxation in mind, and our dentists use the most advanced technology to help you be proactive about your preventative dental health.
